Works Discussed

Mostly we discuss her dissertation fieldwork which transformed into her first book -- background summarized here.

She's trying to wrap up her next book project, Ruins and Glory: The Long Spanish Civil War in Latin America (Harvard University Press, forthcoming), which will be the first major study examining the impact and legacies of the Spanish Civil War in the Americas. When, in the late 1930s, fascist insurrectionists overthrew Spain’s leftist elected democracy to install a religious dictatorship, Latin Americans saw lessons for their own societies.  Owing to the legacies of Iberian empire, ongoing struggles over faith, land, resources, race, and identity uncannily resembled those unfolding across the Atlantic. The project helps illuminate the trans-Atlantic longevity and reach of ideological formations often associated with interwar Europe: socialism, communism, fascism, and anti-fascism.
